Productivity Apps

Post your comments here about apps that are productivity related....meaning things you would use as a teacher (versus the student app comments that should be learning related).

eCove seems like a cool way to do learning walks. iBooks is great...all the classics are free. ItunesU is also a complete education online. I think I have decided the iPad is really not so much a productive tool as it is a consumption tool. Perfect for students.

I used the iPad today for progress monitoring in reading on AimsWeb. I was able to immediately enter the reading data after listening to the students read their passage. Then I was able to show the AimsWeb graphs to the students and have discussions about their data. The kids really enjoyed seeing their data on the screen.

found a website (actually document posted to web, I think) that lists apps by category. This helped me focus my app search.
Thought I would share:

I just found out at you can use the iPad to make free phoned calls. you have to download a free app called whistle ... but it is free, it does work, the only minor drawback is when you make a call, it plays a quck advertisement....another amazing tool for the iPad!

It does seem useful for AIMSWeb, especially if we purchase the Computer Assisted Assessment component. With it, you can score directly on the IPAD and it automatically calculates the final score.

I just realized the other night that items typed in 'notes' can be instantly emailed via the account(s) that have been set up. I see this as a great asset to a meeting. Someone can type notes and email them as soon as meeting is over.

I have tried to use the IPAD for the applications that come up in a typical week. AIMSWeb is fairly easy to use for scoring. You can't view the training videos (quicktime). NetTrekker is OK, but similar problems with some videos and pop ups. In both cases, I would probably only use this for work in those applications if there was no computer available.

Also on NetTrekker - I couldn't get the reader to work. If anyone else has tried and was successful I'd be interested in knowing how.

new app called beatthetraffic is a good tool...it even projects traffic based on patterns. it does include Cincinnati. it's free.

I finally figured out how to delete movies and podcasts ... same way you delete apps...just hold down your finger on it until a little square appears, then click the square. since these are 16 gb ipads, if you have a lot of videos you can fill them up

My favorite apps overall (in no particular order) are BeattheTraffic, Whistle (turns iPad into a cell phone), Virtuoso (turns iPad into a piano), Zillow (real estate), eCOVE (for learning walks), ABC Player (to watch TV Shows...great color), and TaptoTalk

Thanks for the app suggestions. I just sat here and added a few. I will try them out and let you know what I think.

I really wish the Ipad had a USB port to transfer photos; however Dropbox seems to be a solution instead of purchasing the cable. (I am thinking the next Ipad will come equipped with one. (more convenient)

Went to iPad training by apple today and am interested in looking into Itunes u. There seems to be a variety of podcasts with grade level content information. Dianne

This isn't necessarily a productivity app but I downloaded the Halloween Sound Shelf and my kids love it. It has a variety of Halloween characters that make sounds. this app has become popular during free time!

I also liked he spooky sounds app. It was a fun way to have students add spooky sounds while I was reading Halloween books. The light touch needed to activate the device made it a perfect way for some of the student with limited mobility be an active, independent part of the activity.

ScreenShot
I just discovered that when you hold the on/off button and press the home button, it will take a screen shot and place it in the photo gallery. (Convenient for training purposes.)

AudioNote - great app for meetings or recording class. You can write and type as it records. Your notes will coincide with the time during the recording that they were written. Audio playback quality is good.

I used Dragon Dictation this week to redo my lesson plans. My plans are lengthy and instead of retyping everything in certain sections, I used Dragon Dictation to record what I wanted to change and then I emailed it to myself. From there I cut and pasted the info and changed it as needed (not all words dictated perfectly!) and I was finished quicker than usual.
